Dance shoes: why any elegant pair will not do

The atelier has made footwear for theatre, circus, ballet and competitive dance for decades. It is an area where the requirements are not aesthetic but technical — and where a beautiful but wrong shoe is felt within five minutes.

The sole: slides exactly enough

The most important difference. A rubber sole grips the floor. On a pivot, the foot stays locked and the force goes into the knee. A dance sole is leather or suede: it slides in a controlled way, allows rotation and brakes just enough.

The heel, placed differently

On a street shoe the heel falls under the heel bone. In dance, weight sits on the ball of the foot almost throughout, so the heel moves slightly forward to support balance in the real working position. A few millimetres that change everything.

Fixing the foot

Any rotational movement tends to pull the foot out of the shoe. That is why dance sandals have ankle straps and often an extra strap across the toes. Without them, you dance with clenched toes — and that is where cramps come from.

Weight

A dance shoe is light. Every extra gram multiplies across thousands of steps. Thin leathers, minimal linings and flexible soles are used.

For a wedding

If you know there will be four hours of dancing, tell us from the start. A bridal shoe can be conceived also as a dance shoe: the right sole, an ankle strap, a well-placed heel. See Blanche.
