Patina: how to obtain a colour that cannot be copied

Look closely at the Azur Derby: the blue is not uniform. Darker at toe and heel, lighter on the vamp, with transitions no factory can replicate. That is patina.

Dyeing vs patinating

Dyed leather gets its colour at the tannery — uniform, final. Patinated leather starts pale — almost raw — and receives its colour in the atelier, layer by layer: diluted pigment, tinted wax, buffing, more pigment, more wax.

The layers

Each layer is applied by hand — sponge, brush or cloth — and each pass slightly changes the pattern. Work goes light to dark: first the base tone over the whole surface, then the areas that must read deep are darkened — toe, heel, sole edges.

Between coats the leather is left to dry. Haste shows: pigment stays on the surface instead of entering the fibre and, within six months, wears off unevenly.

Why no two pairs are identical

Because each hide absorbs slightly differently and each hand presses slightly differently. Two “Azur” pairs ordered in the same week will resemble each other but will not be identical. For many clients, that is the point.

Which colours work

Blue, burgundy, cognac and deep green come out most spectacularly — colours with depth, where the layers show. Black has nothing to gain: it is already as dark as it gets.

The same technique appears on Vino burgundy, where the fade runs from burgundy to nearly black.

Care

A patina is alive: with wear and occasional waxing the colour gains further depth. Once a year, bring the pair to the atelier — we refresh the patina and check the sole. It is part of the service, not of the sale.
