Box calf, nappa, suede, croc: a leather guide
What the names you hear in the atelier mean, how each leather behaves in wear, and which one fits your life.
“Leather” is a label covering very different things. Here is what the names mean when you choose the material for a made-to-order pair.
Box calf
The classic dress-shoe leather. Firm, with a fine, tight grain, it holds its shape and polishes to a mirror shine. It ages beautifully: after a year it develops natural creases across the vamp — not defects, but the signature of wear.
For whom: the everyday shoe, a derby or oxford you will wear for years.
Nappa
Softer than box calf, it moulds to the foot almost immediately. Comfort from the first wear, but less firm over time — it can deform if the shoe is far too loose.
For whom: flats, moccasins, women's shoes that must be comfortable on day one.
Suede
Still real leather, but sanded on the reverse, which gives the velvety texture. Matte, warm-looking, superb in intense colours — see Regal blue or Prune purple.
Careful: it absorbs water. With a protector spray applied before the first wear and an occasional rubber brush, it holds up very well.
Patent leather
Box calf coated with a lacquer layer. Glossy, dramatic, suited to evening — see the Rosso and Milano loafers. It is not waxed; wipe with a barely damp soft cloth and feed it once a season with a dedicated balm so it does not crack at the flex.
Croc-embossed
Real leather with the scale pattern heat-pressed into it. The look is spectacular — see Havana cognac — without the price or the legal complications of exotic skins.
Metallics
Leather coated with a fine metallic layer, silver, gold or rose gold. Used for sandals and occasion shoes such as Selene or Mint & Rose. Wipe with a dry cloth only.
How to choose
The right question is not “which is the best leather” but “where will the shoe be worn”. Daily office — box calf. Evening — patent. A colour accent — suede. A piece that gets noticed — croc. And if you hesitate, write to us: we send 2–3 leather swatches photographed in daylight before you decide.

- Box calf. It is firm, holds its shape and, cared for, lasts beyond ten years of wear.
- Does suede survive rain?
- Not by nature, but sprayed with a protector and brushed regularly it wears fine for three seasons.
- Is the croc on your shoes real crocodile?
- No. It is bovine leather with a pressed texture. The look is the same; the price and the legal side are completely different.
- Which leather for a first made-to-order shoe?
- Black or cognac box calf. The most versatile, the easiest to maintain and the one that ages most beautifully.
