Flats: why some last ten years and others three months
A flat shoe looks like the simplest thing to make. In fact it is where factory shortcuts show most.
A flat looks like the simplest shoe possible: no heel, no fastening, little leather. Which is exactly why it is the shoe where most production savings are made — and where they show fastest.
1. The counter
The firm piece at the back, between leather and lining, holding the heel's shape. The first saving in cheap production. Without it, after two months the flat collapses backwards and the foot escapes at every step.
Press the back of the shoe with a finger: if it gives completely, there is no counter.
2. The insole
A completely flat sole does not support the arch. An insole with slight relief, in leather that moulds, completely changes how eight hours feel. It is also why made-to-order flats do not have the reputation of being “comfortable for the first hour only”.
3. The sole: flexible but not thin
A flat must bend with the foot — but if you feel every pebble, the sole is too thin and will wear through in a season. The right balance: flexible at the toes, firm under the arch.
4. The topline
The upper line running around the foot. Cut too high it cuts the ankle; too low and the shoe falls off. Made to order it is lowered or raised exactly as your foot needs.
The pointed toe
A pointed flat lengthens the leg almost like a low heel. See Ivoire or Coco, with a contrast toe — a seam demanding perfect symmetry across both shoes.
The bow, if you want one

- Why do my flats deform at the heel?
- Because they have no counter — the firm piece at the back that holds the shape. It is the first saving made in cheap production.
- Are flats bad for your feet?
- Not in themselves, but a completely flat, thin sole does not support the arch. A sole with slight support and a moulded insole solves it.
- Why do they cut into my ankle?
- The topline is cut too high or the edge is too rigid. Made to order, the line is lowered exactly where needed.
