Stitched or glued sole: the difference you feel after two years
One can be replaced three times, the other means the end of the shoe. How to recognise the construction and why it matters more than the leather.
When comparing two pairs of shoes, the first thing everyone looks at is the leather. The second should be the sole — because it decides whether the shoe lasts three years or thirty.
Glued
The sole is bonded to the upper with adhesive, under pressure. It is fast, cheap and holds well — until the adhesive fails. When it does, nothing can be done: the sole cannot be stitched onto an upper never built for it.
Stitched
The sole is stitched to the upper (blake) or to a leather welt running around the shoe (goodyear). The stitching can be undone and redone. That means when the sole wears through — inevitably, after 2–4 years of regular wear — it is replaced, and the shoe carries on.
How to recognise it
Turn the shoe over. A row of fine stitch holes on the sole or the side welt means stitched construction. A completely smooth join between sole and upper means glued.
Why it matters to the maths
A stitched shoe costs more to buy. But if you replace the sole three times, the cost per year of wear drops below that of glued pairs bought one after another. And the upper leather, cared for, looks better at ten years than it did at one.
