Why made-to-order shoes cost more (and when they are worth it)

It is a fair question and deserves an answer without poetry.

Where the hours go

A pair passes through more than sixty operations. Measuring and adjusting the last — one hour. Selecting and cutting the leather — two. Stitching the upper — three to five, depending on the model. Lasting — two, plus the time the leather needs to settle. The stitched sole — two. Finishing and patina — from an hour to a full day if the patina is layered.

Added up: between 15 and 30 hours of work for a single pair. Ten cannot be made at once; one sits on the last.

The materials

Good leather costs three or four times ordinary leather and is chosen piece by piece — a whole hide yields two or three pairs; the rest has flaws invisible in a shop but obvious after two years.

What you are not paying for

No mall rent, no advertising, no distributor margin. The atelier sells directly. That is why a handmade pair here costs about the same as a factory shoe from a known brand — although the construction does not compare.

Cost per year

A factory pair lasts two seasons. A made-to-order pair, resoled three times, lasts 15–20 years. Divide and compare. And the second is more comfortable from day one.

When it is NOT worth it

If you need a pair for one occasion and your foot fits shop shoes well, buy from a shop. Made-to-order makes sense when you have a fitting problem, when you want something that does not exist, or when you want an object that lasts decades.
