Wide foot, high instep, narrow heel: real solutions

Some people have given up on elegant shoes because “nothing ever fits”. In almost every case the problem is that factory shoes are built on an average last — and your foot is not average. Here is what can be fixed.

Wide foot

The most common case. The last is widened at the toe joints without being lengthened — because the length was right, only the width was not. Choose a derby, not an oxford: open lacing gives extra adjustment.

High instep

The shoe is hard to get into and, once on, presses on top. Solved by adding volume to the last exactly at the instep. Models with a wide opening (derby, monk) are your allies; the oxford is not.

Narrow heel

The shoe fits at the front but slips at the heel with every step. It is the most common request from women. The last is narrowed at the rear, and on sandals an ankle strap is added — see Papillon.

Bunions

Elegant shoes are possible, on two conditions: the last widened exactly at the joint, and soft leather with no seam crossing the bunion. We do not hide the problem — we route around it.

Differently sized feet

A 2–5 mm difference is the rule. Above 8–10 mm, two separate lasts are worth it. Made to order this does not cost double; it is one more adjustment, not one more pair.

Thick or slim calves, for boots
